CONIC SECTION Flashcards
Conics
The sections obtained by the intersection of a right circular cone by a plane in different positions relative to the axis of the cone
Different types of conic sections
Ellipse
Parabola
Hyperbola
Rect. Hyperbola
Ellipse:
when a solid cone is cut by a section plane or cutting plane such that it is inclined to both of its generator principle axis then the shape generated will be an ellipse.
Applications of an ellipse
man-holes, arches, bridges, dam
Parabola
When a cutting plane or a section plane cuts the solid cone such that it is parallel to one of its generator then this shape generated will be a parabola
eccentricity of ellipse`
e<1
eccentricity of parabola
e=1
applications of parabola
sound reflectors and light reflectors
Hyperbola
when a cutting plane or section plane cuts the solid cone such that it is inclined to generators, principle axis and intersects only one generator then the shape generated will be a hyperbola.
eccentricity of hyperbola
e>1
Applications of hyperbola
cooling tower and water channels
