What are the two chambers that make up Congress?
The House of Representatives and the Senate .
Why do we need two chambers in congress?
So the small and the large states will be represented fairly .
How many representatives are there ?
435 . They are divided among the states according to the states’ population . ….the larger states get more representatives than the smaller states
How many senators do we have in all?
100…. Two from each state . This makes the small states happy .
What does bicameral mean?
Bicameral means Congress is made up of two houses.
What laws apply to the whole country?
Federal laws!
Who do senators represent?
The needs of the whole state .
Who do the Representatives of the house serve?
They serve the people in a specific section of their state .
What article in the constitution deals with congress?
Article 1
What are the qualifications of a senator ?
30 years old
US citizen for nine years
Live in the state they represent .
What are the qualifications for a Representative ?
25 years old
US citizen for 7 years
Live in the state that they represent
Where do all money bills( like taxes ) begin?
In the House of Representatives .
What are some special duties of the senate?
The Senate approves Presidential appointments, such as judges and cabinet members .
How do checks and valences work?
Each branch of government can check on the other branches of government ! Three Examples …..Congress, the legislative branch, can call for the impeachment of the president . 2. The president can veto a bill passed by Congress . 3. The judicial branch can decide a law is not constitutional .
