they still looked to china in terms of cultural, governmental and social
why did people owe the emperor complete allegiance?
the emperor was said to have a mandate from heaven to rule and therefore all those under him owed him complete allegiance
what happened to an emperor who did not fulfill his responsibilities?
he could have his mandate taken away from him, and people were allowed to speak up if they felt like the emperor was not fulfilling his responsibilities
what did this consequence lead to?
feeling of uneasy for the emperor as he constantly worried about him being overthrown or his mandate being passed to someone deemed more deserving
