what is conformity?
when a person changes their attitude or behaviour due to ‘real’ or ‘imagined’ group pressure.
what are the 3 types of conformity?
compliance, identification, internalisation
what is compliance?
the lowest level of conformity when a person changes their public behaviour but not their private beliefs. usually a short term change.
what is identification?
middle level of conformity when a person changes their public behaviour and their private beliefs, but only when in the presence of the group they are identifying with. usually a short term change.
what is internalisation?
deepest level of conformity when a person changes both their public behaviour and private beliefs. usually a long-term change.
what are the 2 explanations for conformity?
normative social influence and informational social influence.
what is NSI?
conforming to be accepted and belong to a group.
why do people do NSI?
socially rewarding
avoid punishment
what is ISI?
conforming to gain knowledge and be ‘right’
why do people do ISI?
to act appropriately
to avoid standing out
