conformity Flashcards
what is conformity?
Conformity is a form of social influence often leading to a change in behavior/opinion by real or perceived social pressure.
whats are the three types of conformity?
compliance, internalisation,identification
whats is compliance conformity?
When an individual changes their behavior and views in public often siding with the majority. This is only while the group is present and their internal views/behavior remains unchanged.
what is internalisation conformity ?
Internalisation is when a person changes their views/behavior as they believe the majority is right and accept the views/ behavior privately and publicly.
what is identification conformity ?
when you conform to the behavior/views of a group due to valuing something about that group. They identify with the group and conform to be a part of it, they may not conform privately
what are the two reasons for conformity?
NSI (the need to be liked) and ISI ( the need to be right)
what is Informational social influence (ISI)?
Informative social influence (ISI) is when you conform to the ideas/behavior of a majority group because you believe them to be correct. Often occurs in situations when they are unsure.
What is normative social influence (NSI)?
Normative social influence (NSI) is when you conform to the ideas/behavior of a majority group because you wish to be accepted by that group even if you do not conform personally. Often occurs when people are concerned about rejection.
what types of conformity do ISI and NSI often cause?
ISI- Internalisation NSI- Complaince
What are some strengths in the NSI and ISI explanations for conformity.
A strength is research support for both, Lucas and Asch did major studies exploring ISI and NSI respectively.
What are some weaknesses in the NSI and ISI explanation for conformity.
There are individual differences, for example some people don’t show NSI as they are not concerned with being liked. Similarly ISI does not effect everyone similarly, some groups are less prone to conformation such as students.
Many supporting studies for NSI and ISI were conducted in a lab and so lack ecological validity.
