Conformity
A change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or imagined group pressure
Types of conformity :
Compliance
Change your behaviour to fit in with a group
may not necessarily agree with the behaviour/ belief
go along now with it publicly
Not permanent - lasts as long as the group is present
eg. Person laughing at a joke even if they don’t find it funny
Types of conformity :
Identification
Person conforms publicly and privately - they have identified with the group - sense of group membership
Moderate type of conformity - don’t necessarily agree with what the majority believes
eg. Person might support a different football team everytime they move
Types of conformity :
Internalisation
Behaviour / belied of majority is accepted by the individual - part of their own belief system
Permanent - lasts even if majority is no longer present
Changes both public and private views
eg. Person becomes a vegetarian after sharing a flat with a group of vegetarians at university
Explanations :
Informational social influence
Desire to be right - conform because we are unsure of the situation - look to others who we may believe have more information than us
eg. Enter a classroom because everyone else has
Explanations :
Normative social influence
Desire to be liked - conform to fit in with the group - don’t want to appear foolish / be left out
eg. Smoking
Define social influence
Individuals / groups change their attitudes and behaviours
Inc. conformity, obedience, minority influence
