What is conformity?
A type of social influence where an individual changes their behaviour to go along with a group even if they don’t agree with them.
What were the variables that affected conformity identified by Asch?
- Group size.
- Unanimity.
- Task difficulty.
What is the Asch effect?
The influence of the group majority on an individual’s judgement.
What are the two types of motivation to conform catagorised by Deutsch & Gerad (1955)?
- Normative Social Influence.
- Informational Social Influence.
What are the three types of conformity?
- Internalisation.
- Identification.
- Compliance.
What is internalisation?
When an individual changes their behaviour to fit in with a group publicly whilst also agreeing with them privately.
What is identification?
When someone conforms to the demands of a social role in society.
What is compliance?
When an individual goes along with a request or demand in public whilst disagreeing with the group’s viewpoint or behaviour in private.
