What is social influence?
The process by which an individual’s attitudes, beliefs or behavior are modified by the presence or action of others
What is conformity?
A change in a person’s opinions or behaviour as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
What are the two explanations of conformity?
Informational Social Influence
Normative Social Influence
What is informational social influence?
About who has the better information
We want to follow the majority because we want to be right
Leads to a permanent change
Most likely to happen in ambiguous situations
What is normative social influence?
About what behaviour is typical for a social group
People want to be like and not rejected
Leads to a temporary change
Most likely to happen in situations with strangers
Public compliance
What is identification?
Conforming to the opinions or behaviours of a group because there’s something about that group that we identify with
What is internalisation?
When a person genuinely accepts the group norms
This results in a private and public change of opinions or behaviours
What is compliance?
Simply going along with others in public but private not changing personal opinions or behaviours
Compliance results in a superficial change only
