Conformity Flashcards
Conformity definition
When an individual is influenced to change behaviour, attitude and/or beliefs due to inference or pressure from others, real or imagined
Also defined as:
Yielding to group pressures
3 types of conformity
Compliance- weak and temporary
Identification- stronger than compliance but still temporary
Internalisation- permanent and long lasting
Compliance
Most superficial
Changes behaviour to be accepted/to avoid disapproval
Public agreement but internal private views remain in disagreement
Fairly weak and temporary- behaviour changes when not with the group
Identification
When individual confirms as membership of group is desirable
Stronger type of conformity, involving private and public acceptance
However may not agree privately with all groups values
Generally temporary- not maintained once left group
Internalisation
Individual considered views of others and accepted them as their own
Agree publícly AND privately
Deepest and most permanent conformity, lasts wether with the group or not
2 explanations for conformity
Deutsch and Gerard developed normative and informative social influence
Human Need to be right and liked
Normative social influence
Desire to be liked
Strong need for acceptance- best way to be achieved by agreeing with group although not always internally
Emotional process as based if feelings rather than cognitive
Example in asch:
Found in unambiguous task 37% gave incorrect answer, 75% confirmed at least once
Admitted after did it to not stand out
Informational social influence
Confirm due to desire to be right and need for certainty
Occurs when unsure of how to behave in social situations
Internalisation as believe opinions of others are correct and convert to their viewpoint
Cognitive process
When task is ambiguous and we perceive others to be experts
Strength informational SI (evidence)
Jennes- jelly bean guess study
First guess privately then discuss with group
Found second estimate closer to group average
Shows when task is ambiguous we look to others for guidance due to desire to be right
