Conformity Flashcards
The types of conformity
Compliance, identification, internalisation
Compliance
weak type, publicly going along with majority to gain approval, fit in or avoid ridicule, but beliefs remain the same
Identification
conform to a group they value (role model), or look to guidance from, publicly change their beliefs, but not privately agree
Internalisation
strong conformity, publicly and privately accept majority influence by taking on beliefs and make it a part of their own
Explanations of conformity
ISI, NSI
ISI
conforms to gain knowledge or believe someone else is ‘right’, correct behaviour uncertain as in ambiguous environment so look for guidance from majority, most likely to occur in situations that are new, ambiguous, quick decision needed, or assume majority correct
Evaluation of ISI
Research support - Lucas et al (2006) maths questions.
gives validity as would predict findings.
However, lacks population validity.
More research needed
NSI
conform to be accepted or belong to group, conformity is socially rewarding or avoids social punishment, occur when concerned about rejection, social approval, or have greater need for social support, emotional process resulting in a temporary change so compliance or identification
Strength of NSI
Research support - Schultz et al (2008) reusing towels.
gives validity as shows conform to be majority.
Furthermore, has practical application as saved electricity so can be used to help environment.
Useful explanation to manipulate people.
Weakness of NSI
No individual differences - McGhee and Teevan (1967) nAffilators.
Differences impact conformity levels, so incomplete.
Further explored and adapted so complete explanation.
