What is conformity?
Conformity is yielding to group pressure
our behavior’s and belief’s are influenced by larger groups of people
What are the types of conformity?
Compliance
Identification
Internalization
Compliance
- a person goes along with other people’s behaviors or attitudes
-they comply publicly but their private view does not change
-they go along with beliefs to keep the peace and gain approval
-temporary when in the presence of groups
Identification
-individuals adjust their behavior and opinions to those of the group as group membership is desirable
-both public and private
-but is often temporary
Internalisation
-the individual accepts the view and believes the view to be correct
-so… conforming to other people’s beliefs both publicly and privately in the genuine belief they are correct
-permanent
Why do people conform?

-Humans have a need for certainty (to be right)
-when uncertain they can look to others
-happens in unfamiliar situations or ambiguous situations

-humans have a need to be liked/social groups
-agreeing with the majority view because we want to be liked, accepted or gain approval
-occurs when you fear rejection from the group/ strangers
Issues with the suggestion of conformity?
When psychologists proposed these suggestions…
