Conformity Flashcards
What is the definition 1 of conformity?
Yielding to group pressures
What is definition 2 of conformity?
A change in a persons behaviour to opinion as a result of a real or imagined pressure
What is a real pressure
Consequences for not conforming
What is an imagined pressure
There aren’t any consequence for not conforming
What are the 3 types of conformity
Internaslisation, Identification and Compliance
What is Internalisation
Making beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviours of a group your own. It’s often permamnet
Give an example of Internalisation
Being bought up in a religious household and becoming religious yourslef
What is identification
Temporary / short term changes of behaviour and beliefs only in the presence of a group
Give an example of Identification
Acting more professional when you go to work
What is compliance?
You follow other people’s ideas and go along with the group to get their approval and avoid disapproval. You publicly agree but privately disagree
Give an example of Compliance
When friends pressure you into drinking alcohol when you don’t want to and don’t drink outside of social situations
What is informational social influence
When people conform because they want to be correct so they look to others to copy
Give an example of ISI
A person following the direction if a crowd in an emergency we just assume they’re correct
What is Normative social influence
When someone conforms because they want to be liked or part of a group and avoid being embarrassed
Give an example of NSI
A person starting to smoke because they’re surrounded by others who smoke
Give a + of NSI
There is a link between NSI and bullying suggesting real. life application. Psychologists found a boy can be manipulated by a bully into victimising another child because the bully provides a common goal for the group. The boy would victimise the child to avoid the disapproval from his friends
Give a - of NSI and ISI
May not be completely exclusive suggested by Deutsch and GERRARD. For example a dissenting confederate provides social support and reducing the effect of NSI providing the naive participant with a similar and supporting view. Equally reducing ISI through the confederate provides the participant with an alternative source of information. Meaning it may be more beneficial to look at them together
Give a + of ISI
There is evidence to support ISI. Lucas found conformity to an obvious incorrect maths question was greater when the question was harder. showing individuals are more likely to turn to others when they lack information to make their own informed decisions
