confomity Flashcards
what does conformity mean ?
the tendency for an individual to align their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours with those of the people around them.
what does group size mean
The total number of individuals comprising in a social group.
what does unanimity mean ?
the extent to which all the members of a group agree.
In Asc’h studies, the majority was unanious when all the confor
what is task difficulty ?
Asch identified task difficulty as a variable that affects conformity.
He found that when he made the line judgement task more difficult, conformity levels increased, as the participant was more likely to believe that the confederates were right.
what happens in the Asch’s baseline procedure ?
He wanted yo see if the real participants would conform to the major view, even when the answer was clearly incorrect
he used a line judgement tsk, where he placed on real naive participent in a room with seven confederates
what evaluation is there for the Asch’s experiment ?
what is counter point to Asch’s experiment
what are different types of conformity
- internalistion
-identification
-compliance
what is internalisation
we take on the majority view because we accept it as correct.
it leads to a far- reaching and permanent change in behaviour, even when group is absent
what is identification
where we act the the same way as a group as we want to be a part of it.
we don’t nessarly agree with everything the group believe in
what is compliance
temporary type of conformity where we go alone whilst group is around but privately change our views
Change in behaviour only lasts as long as the group is around
what is Informational social influence (ISI)
- when a person conforms to gain knowledge, or because they believe that someone else is ‘right’.
- Informational social influence is usually associated with internalisation, where a person changes both their public behaviour and their private beliefs, on a long-term basis.
what is Normative social influence (NSI)
-as a desire to be accepted and/or liked by a group, which can lead a person to conform as this may be deemed as necessary to fit in with the group so that they can avoid rejection.
what is the research to support ISI
(Informational social influence)
Lucas et al (2006)
found partipents conform more often to incorrect answers they were given when maths problem where difficult
-when easy the
