Influencing factors in conflict framing
- Umbrellas = issues introduced when other issues would not normally accepted as valid. (Promotion example) PURPOSE = Vent anger
- Issue Expansion = extra issues are added to increase distance between parties. PURPOSE = Shitfing attention / face saving but can accelerate conflict by making it hopeless.
- Negative Inquiry = questioning ambiguous statements to pin down issues. PURPOSE = narrow and refocus conflict.
- Fogging = focuses issues but is more manipulative then negative inquiry. Example acknowledging part of issue. PURPOSE = narrow focus but can be part of avoiding style.
- Fractionation = breaking complex conflict into components. PURPOSE = helps set agenda in dealing with conflict
