What was the Cold War?

A period of time where there was open hostility between the USA (and its allies) and the USSR (and its allies). This lasted from the end of the Second World War up until the 1990s (the end of the Soviet Union)

There was tension because of their political beliefs. The US was Capitalist whilst the USSR was Communist

• Workers should seize power from rich factory owners and businessmen
• It’s the government’s job to decide what is made and the cost of said thing
• Everything is controlled by the government to make sure that everyone is equal
• Land, shops and factories should be owned by the government and not individuals whose worry is to make money for themselves

• People should be free to own property and businesses, as well as make money for themselves
• Several political parties, allowing the public to vote for whichever party they want
• Workers get jobs in factories, shops and land that is owned by wealthy individuals or businesses
• Competition between individuals and businesses to produce more and better products with latest technology

Explain The Truman Doctrine and the containment policy

Truman Doctrine: March 1947, President Harry Truman that the USA would help any country, through money and military, that may be under communist threat

Containment policy: Stop the spread of communism by “containing” it in the communist countries

These two soon became interchangeable
