What happened in Manchuria?
Explosion on a Japanese railway line: 18th September, 1931
The Japanese claimed that it was a Chinese attack, and they had also shot the railway guards.
The Japanese army then invaded Manchuria
The Japanese people were ecstatic at the war victory the government weren’t happy, but had to go along with it.
In 1932, Pu Yi was put in charge of the area, and puppeted by the Japanese government.
Why did this happen?
The Japanese needed a new economic market, as the silk trade was collapsing.
They also needed the coal and iron ore to prepare an army and to trade with other countries
Similarly, Japan was becoming overpopulated, and so needed to space its population out in the surrounding areas.
What was the Hoare- Laval Pact?
A secret agreement between Britain, France and Italy that divided up Abyssinia. Leaving the native people serverly disadvantaged, and giving the fertile areas to Italy.
What sanctions did the LON impose on Italy?
Trade ban( not including coal, iron or oil) Few other sanctions placed on italy because the League was powerless to stop its powerful members

Why did they fail to close the Suez canal?
Because Britain and France didn’t want to upset Mussolini as they were afraid he would side with Hitler.
What were the trade sanctions on Abyssinia?
Arms trading was banned, leaving Abyssinia defenceless

Why did Mussolini want to invade Abyssinia?
Mussolini wanted revenge for the defeat they had suffered previously.
Similarly, he needed to distract the Italian people away from the hardships at home.
Abyssinia was also rich in resources, that Italy would need to rebuild the economy after the depression.
Why did trade sanctions against Mussolini fail?
The LON failed to ban the resources that allowed Mussolini to invade Abyssinia. had the league banned these, Mussolini himself said that the invasion may have been flawed.
What was the Pact called between Italy, Britain and France that stated that they would support each other against Germany?
The Hoare- Laval Pact stated that in return for parts Abyssinia, Mussolini would support Britain and France against Hitler if a war ever broke out.
