Confirmation is a Sacrament of Initiation by which baptized persons receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit enabling them to witness to Jesus
Christ both in word and deed.
Why are Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation called Sacraments of Initiation?
They celebrate Christian Initiation. It is through these visible actions that a person becomes a member of the Church.

The Bishop’s hat is called a miter and it is a sign of his office. The staff is called a crozier and it
is a symbol of a shepherd caring for his sheep.
How does the Bishop confirm?
The Bishop extends his hands over those to be
confirmed, prays that they may receive the Holy
Spirit, anoints their foreheads with chrism in the
form of a cross
What are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

What does the Bishop say when he confirms?
As the Bishop anoints the forehead of the person to be confirmed, he says: Be sealed with the

candidate answers: And with your Spirit.

to the Holy Spirit, participating in service
projects, and studying about our faith.
Why are there sponsors at Confirmation?
Sponsors present the person to be confirmed to the Bishop for anointing. They are also to help
and support the confirmed person in their daily
witness to Christ in their lives.
What is required to be a sponsor?
a person must
be at least 16 years of age and a practicing Catholic.
