Q

the pentecost story

A

Before Jesus’ ascension he told the apostles he was sending the power of his father upon them. He names the Holy Spirit in two ways: “The promise of my father” and “The power from on high.” This promise and power came upon the apostles as they gathered in prayer on the fiftieth day after Passover. Pente is the Greek word for “fifty.” There was a strong wind, tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, and they were all filled with the holy spirit. The apostles then proc;aimed the word of God in many tongues.

Q

Seal of the Holy Spirit and indelible character

A

The Sacrament of Confirmation imprints a spiritual mark, an indelible character, on the soul. This means that this Sacrament is so unique that, like Baptism, it can be received only once in a lifetime. This character is permanent. Another term for this mark or character is seal of the Holy Spirit. A seal is an identifier. It is like a brand mark, like a seal on a letterhead or diploma, or like the embossed seal you find on documents that have been certified by a notary public. These seals show that the documents are real and authentic. The seal of the Holy Spirit marks the newly confirmed person as belonging to Christ, as an authentic and fully initiated Christian. The Sacred Chrism is the sign of this seal.

Q

A meaning of the cave story

A

The Holy Spirit can come in wind and earthquake and fire—but most of the time, we can recognize the Holy Spirit in the tiny whisperings of our hearts, in the inspirations for good that come to us and will not let us rest until we act on them. The Holy Spirit is with us, as baptized and confirmed Christians, as we strive to be “imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us.”

Q

7 gifts on the Holy Spirit

A

Throughout our lives we are sustained by the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and won- der and awe. These are messianic gifts that Christ has shared with us in the Holy Spirit. These gifts are not to be kept unopened on a shelf; instead, they are to be opened and used every day, in every need and every situation that affects ourselves or others.

Q

7 fruits of the Holy Spirit

A

When we “live by the Spirit” the fruits of the Holy Spirit begin to show up in our lives. These fruits are: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. These characteristics are called fruits because they are results of growth in Christ, the results of following the Holy Spirit. They are also called fruits because they are the “firstfruits” of eternal life: They are a small taste of what Heaven will be like, and as such, they give us a bit of Heaven on earth. When these fruits grow in us, they also nourish others.

Q

The lonesome valley

A

uses the example of Jesus to remind us that we are responsible for our choices. At times being true to the call in life that reflects your unique relationship with God will lead you through a lonesome valley. Your friends may desert you; some may deny knowing you. Yet even in the midst of all that, you will find people who will stand by you. Those people may not be able to take away the pain you might expe- rience, but they will be with you through it.
