A
- Two of the ways out must be separated by a distance not less than one half the diagonal distance between the areas served
○ 1/3 if sprinklered
○ 1 hr rated corridor is measured along travel path, all others measured in straight line
200-400 feet max travel measured along travel path

Egress doors
A
- Any door other than swing is only allowed for limited occupant dwellings - see code
- Swing in direction of egress travel
Limit encroachment to no more than 7 in when fully open @ 180 deg, no more than half egress width @ 90

- 0-500 two exits
- 500-1000 3 exits
- 1000+ 4 exits
Exit doors directly from room do not need fire rating

Stair enclosure
A
- 4+ floors have 2hr rating with 1.5 hr door
- <4 has 1 hr rating with 1 hr self closing door
Unless floor has 2hr rating then enclosure also needs 2 hr rating

Smokeproof enclosure
A
- Usually for highrises or buildings way underground
- Naturally or mechanically vented vestibules or balconies
Not needed if building is sprinklered

Exit passageway
A
- Horizontal means of egress that is protected from fire the same as enclosed stair
○ Preserve continuity of shifted stair
○ Eliminate excessive travel on a floor
Connect stair to outside

○ Type a: wheel chair clear space accessible, height surfaces not accessible
