Factors Leading to False Confession
Young (waive lawyer, impulsivity)
Low IQ/poor education
false evidence provided by police
Types of False Confession
Voluntary - free admission of guilt from someone uninvolved with he event
Compliant - suspect knows they are innocent but confesses due to pressure or situational factors (time, discomfort)
Internalised - suspect comes to believe they are guilty despite being innocent
Solutions to False Confessions
Limit interrogation time, videotape/record all interviews (focus on room, not suspect)
