Conductors, Semi-conductors And Insulators Flashcards
1
Q
Why are the ‘free’ elections able to move in conductors?
A
Because the valence band and conduction band overlap allowing the ‘free’ electrons to move from atom to atom in the conduction band when a potential difference is applied
2
Q
What is the band positioning like in insulators?
A
The band gap between the valence band and conduction band is very large and so electrons in the valence band cannot jump to the conduction band
3
Q
What is a pure semiconductor?
A
A semiconductor that has not undergone doping
4
Q
How could you increase the conductivity of a semiconductor?
(Not doping)
A
Increase the temperature
