Conductors Flashcards
Purpose of insulating conductors?
prevent unwanted current flow
Unwanted current flow can come in the form of?
Ground faults, short circuits, or electrical shock
The insulation of conductors must always satisfy certain conditions , which is?
Always having a temperature and voltage rating
What does voltage rating refer to?
The wires dielectric strength
What is temp rating?
Amount of heat a wire can withstand before it melts or burns
Rule of thumb for temp rating?
Every 10 degrees beyond normal rating reduces the insulation’s life by 1/2
What to consider when installing wire?
Location - moisture reduces dialectic properties
Toxic elements - can break down insulation
Anything that could cause mechanical damage
What is enamel?
Type of insulation for a conductor, 6-7 coats produce a thin layer of insulation. Used in relays, small transformers, motor windings.
What is varnished cambric?
Type of insulation for conductor. Made up of insulating tape that can be made from cloth coated in varnish.
What is rubber used for?
Type of insulation for conductor. Made from natural rubber and silicone. Used for flexibility, good for high and low temp as well as outdoor use.
Thermo plastics?
Limited use because of its problems of melting under high temp or breaking in cold
Polyvinylchloride (PVC)?
Most widely used thermoplastic. Limited to 600v cause of melting properties.
What are the identification letters for PVC by CSA and what do they mean?
I - is used for dry locations
TW - Suitable for use in wet and dry locations.
TWU - is suitable for direct burial in the ground
Mineral insulation?
Made up of a compound of chemicals such as Mica, Magnesium oxide, and asbestos. Used where high temperatures are needed
Mica?
excellent insulation but not used often
Asbestos?
Was used years ago but not used now due to health hazards. Found in older homes
Magnesium oxide?
Used where no moisture at all can get to the conductor. (fire alarm systems)
