Conduction System Flashcards
What is the role of the Sino-Atrial (SA) Node?
This is a specialised cluster of muscle fibres which are located in the right atrium, they are responsible for generating electrical impulses
What is the role of the Atrio-Ventricular (AV) Node?
The AV node electrically connects the hearts atria and ventricles to coordinate beating in the top of the heart. And it can delay the impulse by 0.1 seconds
What is the role of the bundle of His?
This travels down the septum, and is split into 2 branches. It carrys the impulse to each ventricle
What is the role of the Purkinji Fibres?
They distribute the impulses through the ventricles, causing them to contract.
What is the pathway of an impulse in the conduction system?
- Sino Atrial (SA) Node
- Atrio Ventricular (AV) Node
- Bundle of His
- Purkinji Fibres
What is the first stage of the conduction system?
DIASTOLE
What is the second stage of the conduction system?
ATRIAL SYSTOLE
What is the third stage of the conduction system?
VENTRICULAR SYSTOLE
What occurs in the diastole cycle?
Blood enters the atria from the vena cava and pulmonary vein. The atria and ventricles are relaxed
What conduction takes place in diastole?
No impulse
What conduction takes place in atrial systole?
Impulse from the SA node -> AV node
What conduction takes place in ventricular systole?
AV Node -> Bundle of His -> Purkinji Fibres
