Conduction, Convection, Radiation Flashcards
What is conduction?
Conduction is when a metal or a solid is heated, the particles vibrate which transfers energy to the particles neighbour, which caused the object to fully heat up.
What is an insulator?
A poor conductor E.g air, wool
What is the definition of heat energy in a liquid or gas transferred from a hot place to a cooler place.
This is called convection.
What are the differences between conduction and convection?
CONDUCTION: occurs through a solid, heat particles gained by kinetic energy then transferred to their neighbour.
CONVECTION: occurs through a liquid and a gas, heat transferred by movement of particles.
What are the similarities between conduction and convection?
They both use a transfer of heat and use particles
What is radiation?
1) Transfer of heat using waves not heat particles.
2) Emitted by any hot object
3) Carries thermal energy from a hotter place to a cooler one.
4) Travels away from source in all directions.
