Conduction, Convection and Radiation Flashcards
1
Q
Conduction
A
Thermal conduction is the transfer of heat through matter where the particles stay in place. Heat is transferred by high kinetic energy, faster-moving particles, to lower kinetic energy, slower-moving particlews when they collide.
2
Q
Convection
A
In convection, heat energy is carried by particles as they move towards cooler/lower density area. Convection only occurs in liquids and gases.
eg. heating a room, water in a pot
3
Q
Radiation
A
Radiation does not require a medium to travel through. In radiation, electromagnetic waves or ‘heat waves’ travel from one object to another.
eg. sun, heating your hands next to a fire
