Conduction and convection Flashcards
1
Q
What two other ways can you transfer by heating?
A
- Conduction
- Convection
2
Q
What is conduction?
A
- Heating of solids
- Vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
3
Q
Describe the process of conduction.
A
- Energy transferred by heating to thermal store
- Kinetic energy stores particles in object
- Vibrate + collide –> conduction
- Process continues through object (hot to cold)
4
Q
What is thermal conductivity?
A
- How quickly energy transfers through a material.
5
Q
What is convection?
A
- Heating of liquids and gases
- Energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
6
Q
Describe the process of conduction.
A
- Energy transferred by heating to thermal store of liquid + gas
- This energy is shared across the kinetic energy stores of gas or liquid
- Particles can move –> move faster, heat region
- Space between individual particles increase –> density
7
Q
What is convection like in a room?
A
- Particles flow
- Rise
- Become denser
- Cooler
- Move away
- Hotter
- Cooler
