Conduction Flashcards
1
Q
Define conduction.
A
Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy directly from particle to particle through vibrations.
2
Q
What happens when an object is heated?
A
The particles begin to vibrate because they are gaining energy in their kinetic energy store.
3
Q
What happens when vibrating particles touch?
A
As vibrating particles touch, they’ll pass on the energy to the closest particle(s) near them..
4
Q
Why is metal a good conductor?
A
Metal is a good conductor of heat because it has free electrons which speed up the process of conduction.
5
Q
In which state(s) does conduction take place in?
A
Conduction can take place in all states, however they will not be as efficient as in solids.
