conduction Flashcards
what is thermal conduction?
the process where heat is transferred by collisions between neighbouring atoms or molecules
what does a high thermal conductivity mean?
that it is a good conductor
what does a low thermal conductivity mean?
that it is a bad conductor/ a good insulator
what is a conductor?
anything that allows electricity or heat to flow through it eg. metals, especially copper
what is an insulator?
anything that doesn’t allow electricity or heat to flow it eg. plastic, wood, glass, rubber
how to test the thermal conductivity of metals?
the drawing pin experiment: drawing pin coated in vaseline attached to the end of a metal rod which is being heated. first to fall: high thermal conductivity.
how can you prevent heat being transferred by conduction?
make a vacuum
what materials can heat be transferred to by conduction?
solids and liquids because the particles are closer together in them
