Conditions - ORBITS Flashcards
Lagophthalmos:
Incomplete closure of eyelids
Ptosis:
droopy eyelid
Eyelid Myokymia
(eye twitching): lack of sleep, stress, high caffeine intake, dry eyes (orbicularis oculi muscle)
Plica semilunaris
Homologous to the nictitating membrane or third eyelid of lower Mammals
Allow lateral movements of eye
Caruncle
Located medial to plica semilunaris
A highly vascular pink nodule of modified skin containing large nest of accessory lacrimal and sebaceous glandular tissue
Covered with epithelium that contains goblet cells
Tear drainage system
LAC GL LAC DUCT EYE LAC PUCTUM LAC CANAL 8mm COMMON CANAL LAC SAC NASALSC DUCT 10mm INF MEATUS/VALVE HASNER 12 mm
Contraction of Orbicularis muscle, expands the sac, creates negative pressure and pulls tears form
canaliculus into nasolacrimal sac.
Relaxation collapses the sac pushing tears into
nasolacrimal duct
Mittendorf’s dot:
remnants of cloquet’s
cancal (CC)[regression of hyloid artery which supply blood to lens during development] posterior to the lens
Begmeister’s papilla:
remnants of cloquet’s
canal anterior to optic nerve head (ONH)
Accommodation:
the lens changes shape to focus for close up or distance vision spasm, excess, infacility (transient blur, slow responsive accommodation)
Presbyopia,
loss of accommodation
Adenocarcinoma:
malignant glandular epithelial cells
Sub-tenon’s
injection to treat post cataract surgery inflammation.
