Conditions (Jargon?) Flashcards
Ascites
The accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, causing abdominal swelling.
Peritonitis
Inflammation of the peritoneum, the tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen
Empyema
A collection or gathering of pus within a naturally existing anatomical cavity
Abscess
A collection of pus that has built up within a tissue
Fascia
The thin sheath of fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle or other organ
Cellulitis
A bacterial infection involving the skin. It specifically affects the dermis and subcutaneous fat
Erysipelas
An acute, sometimes recurrent disease caused by a bacterial infection. It is characterized by large, raised red patches on the skin, especially that of the face and legs, with fever and severe general illness.
Endocarditis
Endocarditis is an inflammation of the inner layer of the heart, the endocardium
Myalgia
Pain in a muscle or group of muscles
Cystitis
Bladder infection (UTI)
Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the gallbladder
Dysuria
Painful or difficult urination
Thrombosis
Clotting or coagulation of blood in a part of the circulatory system
ECMO
Extra carporeal membrane oxygenation
Thrombophlebitis
Inflammation of the wall of a vein with associated thrombosis
Teratogen
an agent that causes embryo malformation
Cholestasis
A condition where bile cannot flow from the liver to the duodenum
Aplastic anemia
Deficiency of all types of blood cells caused by failure of bone marrow development
Leucopenia
Reduced number of white cells in the blood
Agranulocytosis
Deficiency of granulocytes in the blood
Thrombocytopenia
Deficiency of platelets in the blood
PTLD
Post transplant lymphoproliferative disease
EBV driven expansion of B-cell clone, can progress to lymphoma
Pneumothorax
When air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall (collapsed lung)
Dyspnea
Difficult or labored breathing
Pleocytosis
Increased cell count (particularly WBCs) in a body fluid; often is specifically an increase in WBCs in CSF.
Hydrocele
Pathologic accumulation of fluid in a body cavity.
Hemoptysis
Coughing up blood
Factor VII (7)
Antihemophilic agent (causes blood to clot, part of coagulation cascade)
Icteric
Having jaundice
Mediastinum
Central compartment of the thoracic cavity (contains the heart and its vessels, the esophagus, trachea, thymus and lymph nodes of the central chest)
Suppuration
The process of pus formation
Thrombosis
Local coagulation or clotting of the blood in a part of the circulatory system
Infarction
the obstruction of the blood supply to an organ or region of tissue, typically by a thrombus or embolus, causing local death of the tissue.
Vitrectomy
Removal of the vitreous humor from the middle of the eye
SCUF
Slow continuous ultrafiltration. A type of dialysis that to remove excess fluid that does not correct for electrolyte imbalances or acid-base disturbances.
CRRT
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy. Dialysis that occurs continuously (rather than intermittently) and removes both water and waste products. Removal occurs at a slow and steady rate rather than large volumes all at once like intermittent dialysis.
Embolus
A blood clot, air bubble, piece of fatty debris, or other object that has been carried in the blood stream to lodge in a vessel causing an embolism.
