Conditions Flashcards
In terms of ecology, how would you describe what a niche is?
A niche is an animals environment, their behaviour within the environment as a whole, habitats.
Why might temperature increase enzyme activity and to what temperatures does enzyme activity start to increase at?
Enzyme activity increases in hot temperature due to the molecule movement in the heat. Approximately every 10oC enzyme activity doubles.
Why might chemical reactions and heat be a worry for ecologists?
Because the change in growth of animals. Temperature plays a very important role within the size of an animal..
What type of niche is it when species are found?
A realised niche.
What is a fundamental niche?
When animals are excluded from possible harsh survival conditions or taken out by predators.
What is Physiological time?
Time for growth, calculate from threshold temperature, time and temperature. It only applies to insects
How do plants keep in temperatures?
If too cold, the petals face towards the sun and if too hot, the petals move away, parallel to the sun.
In artic and alpine, why are the plants low to the ground?
To reduce heat loss so that the wind does not take away from the heat, the lower to the ground the better as the wind is less likely to take away from the heat.
What organisms can survive extreme temperatures?
Microbes.
What is biodiversity?
A habitat.
How do plants avoid dying during winter?
Plants require periods of being cold before they will eventually germinate.
What does germinate mean?
Begin to grow.
What is the biggest factor to plant distribution?
Snow and forst.
Is it true to say, the more species that can survive in a low temp will be more abundant in quantity?
No. The higher the temperatures that can be survived, the most organisms there will be.
