Conditionnel Flashcards
When do you use the conditional tense in French?
2
- When talking about what would happen in the future
e. g. I would watch TV - When talking about ambitions or intentions
e. g. I would like to be a vet, I would like to go to Australia
What are the conditional endings for all verbs?
- Je -ais
- Tu -ais
- Elle/on/il -ait
- Nous -ions
- Vous -iez
- Elles/ils -aient
Which other tense shares the same endings as the conditional?
The imperfect
So the only difference between them is that the CONDITIONAL uses the INFINITIVE form of the verb (excluding -re verbs) as teh stem, while the IMPERFECT DROPS them (except for -ir verbs which retain the ‘i’)
Give steps to forming the conditional tense
Use aider, finir, and vendre to demonstrate
- Take the infinitive of the verb as your stem (EXCEPTION drop the ‘e’ for -re verbs)
e. g. aider, finir, vendr - Add ending that agrees with pronoun
e. g. J’aiderais, je finirais, je vendrais
What other tense shares the same stem as the conditional?
The futur proche - they differ only on endings
How do you make the stem in the conditional for all verbs?
Use the infinitive
e.g. aider, finir
Drop the ‘e’ if -re
e.g. vendr
