Conditioning Techniques (BHV) Flashcards
ARE APPROPRIATE
At Home
When a child misbehaves the mother shouts, this can be positively reinforcing. Parental control over pocket money has long been used to increase positive behaviours
ARE APPROPRIATE
In School
McAllister et al - Found inappropriate speaking in high school could be curved by the use of teacher praise and disapproval.
ARE APPROPRIATE
Peers
A child’s peers who are similar in age and development also affect them. Positive and Negative sanctions in your peer group influence the child’s behaviour overall.
ARE APPROPRIATE
Vulnerable Children
Psychologists use conditioning techniques with autistic children in order to increase frequency and quality of social interactions. Cheney et al - A “funhaler” was used with children with asthma and had positive responses to treatment.
ARENT APPROPRIATE
at home
Morris claims the naughty step can have long term emotional effects. Without empathy and help with feelings, the naughty step will negatively affect development.
ARENT APPROPRIATE
In School
Montessori education believes that rewards and punishments advocated by conditioning techniques are harmful to a child’s development. They interfere with a child’s internal drives to learn. Lepper et al (1973) conducted research that supports this criticism. He showed children’s motivation were destroyed by expectations of a reward.
ARENT APPROPRIATE
Peers
Peer group influences aren’t always desirable ones. Bricker et al. - Found children as young as 10 were more likely to smoke if their peer group smoked. They found positive reinforcement from a peer group isn’t always positive.
