Condensation Flashcards
Define condensation
Warm moist water vapour comes in contact with a cold surface and turns in water.
Two types of condensation
Surface and interstitial
5 Damages caused by condensation
Mould
Damage to decorations and fittings
Corrosion and decay of the building fabric
Structural failure
Less thermal resistance
Examples of adverse health effects
Respiratory infections
Allergic disease
Irritative and non-specific symptoms
Chronic pulmonary diseases such as bronchitis
What causes adverse health effects?
Prolonged dampness in building materials can cause proliferation of a number of fungal and bacteria
Sources of Condensation
People
Cooking
Clothes washing
Clothes drying
Industrial Processes
How to control surface condensation
Reduce the generation of moisture
Increase ventilation
More insulation
Increasing heat input
How to control interstitial condensation
Use vapour barrier
Raise internal temperature
Select materials to ensure any part of the structure is above dew point temperature
