Concussions Flashcards
15 point scale used to rate mental status and function-used to rate severity of brain injury and predict outcome; based on eye opening, verbal responses and motor control
Glasgow coma scale (GCS)

Occurs minutes/hours/days AFTER initial brain insult; microscopic/cellular (intracellular swelling, electrolyte imbalances, inflammatory response, cytotoxic edema, disruption of axonal neurofilament organization)
Secondary brain injury
Battle’s sign, raccoon eyes, CSF rhinorrhea or otorrhea, & hemotympanum are all signs of ___
Basilar skull fx
May be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere in body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head; clinical syndromes may or may not include loss of consciousness
concussion
Signs may include: vacant stare, delayed verbal expression, inability to focus attention, disorientation, slurred or incoherent speech, gross observable incoordination
concussion
Diffuse cerebral swelling->ICP; disordered cerebral auto regulation
Second impact syndrome
