Cranium
The bone that forms the head
Concussion
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when the brain is shaken/moves rapidly within the skull
Coup
An injury to the brain that occurs at the site of impact when the head hits an object
Contrecoup
An injury that occurs on the opposite side of an organ (the brain) from where it was struck; A fracture opposite to the point of impact

A medical symptom that causes discomfort/pain when exposed to light
Phonophobia
An intense, irrational fear of certain sounds, especially loud/sudden ones; a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of sound
Tinnitus
The perception of sound when there is no external source/other people can’t hear; often described as ringing in the ears

Retrograde Amnesia
A form of memory loss that causes an inability to remember events from before an injury/disease
Anterograde Amnesia
A form of memory loss that makes it difficult/impossible to form new memories after the onset of the disorder/incident
Battle Sign
Bruising behind the ear that indicates a fracture to the base of the skull
Epidural Hematoma
A life-threatening condition that occurs when blood collects between the inner table of the skull and the dura mater (membrane that covers the brain
