Concussion
A mild traumatic brain injury that affects brain function
Cranium
The bones that form and make up the entirety of the head
Coup
A bruise directly related to the site of the injury
Contrecoup
A contusion remote from, and classically opposite to, the actual site of impact to the head.
Amnesia
Amnesia is a general term describing memory loss
Photophobia
Refers to your eyes’ sensitivity to light, especially bright light, which can cause discomfort and even pain
Phonophobia
Refers to your ear being sensitive or afraid to sound
Tinnitus
Perception of sound that does not have an external source, so other people cannot hear it

A form of memory loss that causes an inability to remember events from the past
Anterograde amnesia
A type of memory loss that occurs when you can’t form new memories
Battle sign
Bruising over the mastoid process that is typically the result of head trauma
Epidural hematoma
An extra-axial collection of blood within the potential space between the outer layer of the dura mater and the inner table of the skull
Glasgow coma scale
The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a system to “score” or measure how conscious you are. It does that by giving numbered scores for how awake you are
Q-collar
A collar that pinches a vein in the neck that builds slight pressure in the brain to provide cushion for the brain when hit
