A
In conclusion, “Visiting hour” by Norman MacCaig is a poem which presents hospitals as unpleasant places which have a huge emotional impact on their patients, visitors and staff as they are filled with death and uncertainty. In the last stanza MacCaig uses the quote “in the round swimming waves of a bell” to enforce this, as it signifies the end of the speakers visiting hour but it also signifies the last time that the speaker will ever see their loved one as they are on their death bed. Therefore, it paints hospitals as a place filled with death and the emotions attached to death.
