  • The Conch and Piggy are constantly linked throughout the novel. This may be because Piggy, as the representative of the educated working class relies on the conch to be able to share his opinion. This is reflected by the fact that once Piggy dies the conch is completely shattered.
  • Golding may be reinforcing the importance of democracy to explain how many of the working class her valuable opinions that should also be taken into consideration when making decisions
  • Throughout the novel, the conch loses its colour until it is almost transparent. This portrays the depreciating value of the conch. The fact that it becomes near-transparent shows how it is as if it is not there
