Metaphor
non-literal comparison of 2 things not using like or as
Metonymy
Using something closely identified with an object to mean the object.
Paradox
An apparent contradiction that is in some sense true
Personification
Giving human attributes to a non-human object or process
Simile
A non-literal comparison USING like or as
Symbol
A concrete object of process that has another meaning to it
Synecdoche
Using part of a something to suggest the whole object (My new wheels)
Alliteration
Repetition of initial consonant sounds
Assonance
Repetition of internal vowel sounds
Consonance
Repetition of internal consonant sounds (bad sod, fun win, big leg, sing wrong) * Can’t have repeating vowel sounds.
Onomatopoeia
A word whose sound is its meaning (whoosh, bang, snap)
Phonetic Intensive
A word whose sound suggests its meaning (whisper, flicker, glimmer, whoosh, cut)
Rhyme
Repetition of both internal vowel and consonant sounds
