Conceptual Flashcards
Relationship between IV and DV
The DV is subject to change depending on whether or not the IV, which is the event manipulated, is changed.
Descriptive Statistics Purpose/Nature (Two Broad Categories)
Reduces large amounts of data in one or two generalizations or categories about the whole (gender, classification, eye color, hair color).
Three Types of Descriptive Stats
1) . Frequencies which are %s and proportions
2) . Measures of central tendencies such as mean, median and mode.
3) . Variability which is the range and SD.
Inferential Statistics Purpose/Nature (Two Broad Categories)
Allows the individual to make assumptions about a sample and apply it to a population in order to test a hypothesis and find meaning or significance.
What are the 4 Types of Data in Stats
1) . Nominal
2) . Ordinal
3) . Interval
4) . Ratio
Nominal Data
There is a difference of KIND that falls into a specific category such as gender, eye color, marital stats
Ordinal Data
There is a difference of DEGREE based in ranking and it is NOT set on a continuous line.
Ex. Ranking of best 2013 car manufactures from best to worst. Five starts or two stars
Interval Data
There is a difference of DEGREE that IS defined on a continuous line where no absolute zero exists.
Ex. Temperature of Celsius and Fareighnheight
Ratio Data
Difference of DEGREE defined on a continuous number line WITH and absolute 0.
Ex. Height, weight, age, length
Reason Data types need to be evaluated before statistical analysis
