What is Brown & Levinson’s Politeness Theory
The use of positive and negative strategies to affect social interaction
Positive face
an image of yourself that will be perceived as positive by others
negative face
the desire to be autonomous and unconstrained
bald on record
when a person acts directly without concern for face needs

makes use of implicatures such that the listener has to generate inferences about the speaker’s intended meaning.
