Relates to how an individual feels about and experiences their health
What does illness relate to?
Relates to how a person feels about and experiences any disease or injury they have
What is the difference between disease and illness?
Disease- physical or mental disturbance involving symptoms, disfunction or tissue damage, illness- more subjective related to personal experience of a disease
The dynamic nature of health and wellbeing
Constantly changing, often gradual and may not be obvious when happening but it can also change quickly
The subjective nature of health and wellbeing
Influenced by or based on personal beliefs, feelings or opinions
The dynamic nature of illness
It changes constantly as a person experiences disease or injury, may be rapid and produce obvious changes, or occur gradually and difficult to notice

Affect the level of illness experienced from a range of factors like, age, past experience with disease or injury, pain threshold and level of social support they have
Physical health and wellbeing
The state and functioning of the body and its systems, includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities/ tasks
Social health and wellbeing
The state and quality of the interactions & relationships that an individual has with other people, includes the ability to manage/ adapt to different social situations
Emotional health and wellbeing
The positive management and expression of emotional actions and reactions and the ability to display resilience
Mental health and wellbeing
The current state of wellbeing that relates to a person’s mind/ brain and the ability to think/ process information, includes thought patterns, self-esteem and levels of stress/ anxiety
Spiritual health and wellbeing
Relates to ideas/ beliefs/ values/ ethnics that arise in the minds/ conscience of humans, includes concept of hope/ peace/ guiding sense of meaning or value and reflection on your place in the world
Physical optimal health
Health body weight, optimal blood pressure and levels of energy, appropriate levels of fitness and absence of illness, disease or injury
Social optimal health
Supportive network of friends, productive relationships with other people, supportive and well-functioning family
Emotional optimal health
Effectively express/ manage emotional actions/ reactions
