Independent clause
Can stand alone- can be its own sentence
Ex) “I could not understand…”
Prepositional phrase
Must have preposition
Ex) “Under the bridge”
Infinitive phrase
To + a verb
Ex) “…to think…”
Participial phrase
Describes
Ex) “…soaking in the late afternoon sun…”
Gerund
A noun used in the form of a verb
Ex) “…working as a skillful surgeon…”- “working” is the gerund
Appositive phrase
Phrase that renames
Ex) “Kayla, the soccer player, is fucking awesome.”
Fragments
Incomplete sentences- could be dependent clauses
Run-ons
A sentence that does not make any grammatical sense; carried on for too long, resulting in lengthy structure
Simple sentence
1 independent clause
Ex) “Our move to Texas was temporary.”
Compound
Has at least 1 comma fanboy with no dependent clauses
Compound complex
Has at least 1 comma fanboy with dependent clause(s)
