Concepts of GI DZ Flashcards
Filling dysfunction
Failure to relax
increase in postprandial intragastric pressure cause pain, nausea, and vomiting
What type of food moves faster/ easier digestion?
Liquids> solids
Carbs> Protein> Fat
What is normal gastric emptying time in a dog?
fed its caloric requirement once daily is 12-14 hours; if vomiting 18 hr post meal means delayed gastric emptying
Emptying dysfunction
gastric and SI diseases
- delay emptying and cause vomiting, gastric outlet obstruction
Components of gastric barrier?
bicarb, epithelial cells, surface mucus, mucosal blood flow, prostaglandins, basal membrane
Gastric barrier dysfunction
MC in dogs
- cause pain, nausea, vomiting
What is one key distinguishing factor between vomiting & regurg?
Retching ( active abdominal contractions)
What are the 4 centers that stimulate the emetic center?
Cerebral cortex
Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone
Oculovestibular System
Gastrointestinal Tract
The colon has limited capacity to absorb water, but does so efficiently. T/F
True
What causes osmotic diarrhea & examples
excess of osmotically active molecules are retained in the bowel lumen & results from failure to digest or absorb nutrients
Ex: EPI, intestinal dysbiosis, acute viral disease, and lactose intolerance
What causes secretory diarrhea & examples
stimulation of excess secretion overwhelms absorption
Ex. Enterotoxin & fat malabsorption (EPI)
What causes exudative diarrhea & examples
tissue fluid, serum proteins, or blood leakage due to mucosal permeability (2ndary to inflammation)
What causes disordered motility & examples
faster motility through GI tract= less time available for absorption (ex. opiods)
