CONCEPTS FOR PROPER ASSESSMENT Flashcards
how can the nurse find the baby’s FHR?
use the Leopold’s maneuver to identify where the baby’s fetal back is and place the ultrasound transuducer over the fetal back on the mom’s abdomen
what are types of external monitoring?
ultrasound transducer or tocotransducer
what is the ultrasound transducer?
monitor FHR over the client’s abdomen
what is the tocotransducer?
monitors and records uterine contractions
what is the main internal monitoring used to assess FHR?
continuous internal fetal monitor fetal scalp electrode which is at the presenting part of the fetus to monitor FHR and used with an IUCP
what does the IUCP monitor?
the intrauterine pressure catheter helps monitor frequency, duration, and intensity of contractions
what is station?
measurement of fetal descent in cm with station 0 being at level of imaginary line at the level of the ischial spines, minus stations being superior to ischial spines, plus stations being inferior to ischial spines
what is engagement?
occurs when the presenting part passes through the pelvic inlet at the level of the ischial spine (station 0)
what is dilation?
stretching of cervix to allow adequate fetal passage
what is effacement?
cervical thinning and shortening
what is presentation of the baby?
the part of the fetus that is entering the pelvic inlet first and leads through the birth canal during labor (preferably the back of the head)
