Give an example of a Monotreme?
Duck-billed platypus
Give an example of a Marsupial:
Kangaroo
Give an example of a placental mammal
Human
Describe 4 adaptations possessed by birds that better them to fly:
Feathers
Bones
Air sac
Single organs
Distinguish between endothermic and ectothermic
Endothermic - regulate their body temp. using metabolism
Ectothermic - regulate body temp. by absorbing heat energy from the environment
What’s the function of a “pit” on a pit viper?
It’s a sensory organ on the head that can “see” infrared. It allows the viper to follow its prey in dark conditions
List 3 pit vipers found in South Carolina
Rattlesnakes
Cottonmouth/water moccasin
Copperhead
Describe how the water vascular system of an echinoderm functions.
Water enters the tube feet then travels through the radial canals. It is released on the dorsal side of the animal.
What does the water vascular system do?
Controls water pressure and allows the echinoderm to pump water through its body for respiration and locomotion
Describe how the Amoebocyte functions in the digestive process of a sponge
Food particles are engulfed via phagocytosis and transferred to Amoebocyte. The Amoebocyte transfers nutrients to other cells of the sponge
Describe how choanocytes function in the digestive process of a sponge
The beating of flagella lets Choanocytes create a current that draws water in. Food particles are then engulfed via phagocytosis
Give the advantages of an alternation of generation between the medusa and polyp stages seen on the Cnidarians
It allows for both sexual and asexual reproduction as well as mobile and more stationary stages
Describe the 3 major parts of a mollusc’s body
Muscular foot
Visceral mass
Mantle
List 4 major characteristics that all chordates must posses
Dorsal, hollow nerve cord
Notochord
Gill slits
Post-anal tail
