Concepts Flashcards
Covalent
Non-Metal - Non-Metal
Ionic Bond
Non-metal - Metal
Naming Covelent
Element name and more electronegative atom with -ide suffix. Use Mono, di, tri, etc.
Naming Ionic
Cation-element name; anion + -ide,-ate, -ite suffix. Does not use mono, di, tri, etc. Number of atoms inferred by charge.
Which type of bond has lattice energy?
Ionic
What does the strength of the lattice energy depend on??
Charge on ion and ion size. Example: MgO>NaF and NaF>KF
How does lattice energy affect boiling point??
The greater the lattice energy, the higher the melting point
Which type of bond uses polar, non-polar??
Covalent bond
How do you determine if a compound is polar or non-polar??
Bond polarity is determined by the difference in electronegativity of atoms forming the bond. A difference of greater than 0.5 give the bond polarity
What type of bonds are formed with polar compounds?
Dipole-dipole and H-bonds
What type of bonds are formed with non-polar bonds??
London dispersion forces and induced dipole-induced dipole
What does the strength of polar bonds depend on??
Polarity of bond, size of atom, i.e. charge and distance
what does the strength of non-polar bonds depend on??
size and shape of molecules
What is a Dipole-dipole bond?
type of polar bond; also the stronger the d-d force, the higher the boiling point
What is an H-bond?
Hydrogen attacted to an F, O, N, or C. High boiling point.
