Chat GPT (Kind of generative AI; other examples - Dall E-2 is for images)
*Open AI
**Founder - Sam Altman, 2015 (started as non-profit, recently created profit)
**Revenue - 2023:$200M, 2024:$1B (subscription fees)
**recently valued @ double the valuation ~ $30B
**2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI and became its preferred partner for commercializing new technologies for services like search engine Bing and design app Microsoft Design

A

It’s a LLM - large language model

Pros & Cons
+ Sounds coherent and confident
+ Could disrupt Google and search (could be a more conceptual & semantic search engine)
- No logical reasoning; quite shallow; truth and falsity thoroughly & authoritatively mixed together
- Not current; does not provide source
- Requires work on truthfulness & robustness
- Not a DB; works on association between words & sentences

Q

Market Sizing - TAM, SAM, SOM

A

TAM stands for Total Addressable Market. It refers to the total demand for a particular product or service in a given market.

SAM stands for Serviceable Available Market. It refers to the portion of the TAM that a company can realistically target or serve. This can be calculated by taking into account factors such as the company’s distribution channels, pricing, and customer segments.

SOM stands for Serviceable Obtainable Market. It refers to the portion of the SAM that a company can actually capture, based on its competitive strengths and weaknesses.

Example - TAM for a new type of energy drink is $1 billion. The SAM might be $500 million, given company only has distribution in certain regions and product is priced at a premium. SOM might be $200 million, based on the company’s marketing efforts and its ability to effectively compete against other brands

Q

LIDAR (“light detection and ranging” or “laser imaging, detection, and ranging”)

Apple phones have LIDAR in pro models (works in conjunction with camera for depth sensing - upto 5m; for augmented reality)

A

Lidar sensors are typically mounted on a rotating platform, which allows them to scan a wide area and create a 3D map of the surroundings. The sensor sends out a laser pulse and measures the time it takes for the pulse to return after it hits an object. By measuring the round-trip time of the laser pulse and the angle at which it was sent, the lidar sensor can calculate the distance to the object and its location in 3D space.
