The Harlem Renaissance
A cultural revolution in New York that was sparked by the great migration. African American Art, literature, philosophy, music, etc. Harlem became the largest population of African Americans outside of the south.
Sharecropping
A system of subleasing land to emancipated people after the civil war where enslavers would lease a small amount of land to the former enslaved on their land so that they would keep working for them. Often working in debt, almost an indentured servant relationship
Crop lien system
A farming system where the workers would have to pay a large share of their profits with the landowners they sub-leased from
V-DISCS
12 inch vinyl records that were owned by the military in WWII. this label was meant to be distributed to US and allied troops, and the masters were held by the military. Every musician who recorded with this label lost their rights to the pieces they recorded. Vinyl records replaced shellac records, as vinyl was easier to transport, and not being rationed for the war
Union Recording Ban
A period of two years of musician strikes for better royalties that prevented them from recording music, and in combination with the cabaret tax that it made it hard for musicians to make money performing live
